A seven-segment display is commonly used in electronic display device for decimal numbers from 0 to 9 and in some cases, basic characters. Use of (LEDs) in seven segment displays made it more popular, whereas of late liquid crystal displays (LCD) displays have also come into use. Electronic devices like microwave ovens, calculators, washing machines, radios, digital clocks etc. To display numeric information are the most common applications.
Let’s take a look at the 7 segment display pinout to have a better understanding. 7 segment display pinoutA 7 segment display is made of seven different illuminating segments.
How to Display any Character on a 7 Segment LED Display. In this project, we will show how you can display any character that is capable of being displayed on a 7 segment LED display. All numeral characters can be displayed on a 7 segment display. To implement a 4-digit hex-to-7-segment decoder on the Nexys2 FPGA prototyping board. Simulation of this 4-bit counter is shown in the figure below the code.
These are arranged in a way to form numbers and characters by displaying different combinations of segments. The binary information is displayed using these seven segments. LED or light emitting diode is which emits the energy in the form of light, differ from normal P-N junction diode which emits in the form of heat. Whereas use properties of liquid crystal for displaying and do not emit the light directly. These LED’s or LCD’s are used to display the required numeral or alphabet. Types of 7 segmentsThere are basically 2 types of 7 segment LED display. Common Anode: All the Negative terminals (Anode) of all the 8 LEDs are connected together.
All the positive terminals are left alone.Common Cathode: All the positive terminals (Cathode) of all the 8 LEDs are connected together. All the negative thermals are left alone. Working on 7 segmentsSeven segment devices are generally made up of LEDs. These LEDs will glow when they are forward biased. The intensity of the LEDs depends on forward current.
So, sufficient forward current has to be provided to these LEDs to glow with full intensity. This is provided by the driver and is applied to the seven segments.

Table of Contents.BCD to 7 Segment DecoderThe BCD to 7 Segment Decoder converts 4 bit binary to 7 bit control signal which can be displayed on 7 segment display. Seven display consist of 7 led segments to display 0 to 9 and A to F.VHDL Code BCD to 7 Segment Display decoder can be implemented in 2 ways. By simplifying Boolean expression to implement structural design and behavioral design. For constructing BCD to 7 segment display, first construct truth table and simplify them to Boolean expression using K Map and finally build the combinational circuit. According to the truth table of this 7 segment decoder, the BCD input “0” is encoded as a dash, because segment G is active. Please not that people assume high-active logic unless stated otherwise. So you should either correct your truth table and equations or state that you are using a low-active 7-segment display. Please note further, that the display itself it not low-active.
The low-activeness is mostly caused by switching transistors to drive the 7-segment inputs. These transistors cause a polarity inversion.
